The 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship kicks off on the 10th of May and will run until the 26th. Hosted by Slovakia, this championship will hold its matches in the cities of Kosice and Bratislava.
Slovak Ice Hockey Federation President Martin Kohut stated, "I can say that preparations are going according to the plan and the organizing committee is working at full blast. This way I would like to invite everyone to come to Slovakia. I am sure that together we will create unforgettable world championship, amazing atmosphere, and since it is typical for Slovaks, we will come up with something more, so the fans will remember the championship in Slovakia forever. I believe the performance of our national team will help to achieve that.“
IIHF ICE HOCKEY TEAMS
Group A will duel it out in Kosice while Group B will be playing in the capital city. Number one seed Canada and number 4 seed United States are in group A, while group B claims no.2 seed Sweden and no.3 seed Russia. This year’s tournament saw the US take home a bronze while Germany took silver in February at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics. Sweden, however, will be searching for a third title in a row. Come the championships, we will be seeing a rerun of the 2018 finals as runners-up Switzerland and Olympic gold medalists Russia, Latvia, Austria, Czech Republic, and recently promoted Italy.

The Slovak capital holds 650,000 inhabitants with 4.2 million people residing in a 100-kilometer radius. Ondrej Nepela Arena, the arena where the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2019 will take place, holds 10,040 seats for hockey with two practice rinks all located under the same roof. The arena is currently under maintenance, upgrading the facility according to the IIHF rules. A new refrigeration system is being put into place along with new boards, updated dressing rooms, and new arena technology.
Slovakia’s second-largest city, located close to the Hungarian border, accommodates a population of 240,000. The championship matches will take place in the Steel Arena which offers 8,347 seats with an additional ice sheet for practices.
2019 ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VENUE INFORMATION
Around 500 volunteers will be helping out at the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Each stadium will host 28 games in the preliminary round and two quarter-finals. Semi-finals and the medal games will take place at the Ondrej Nepela Arena in Bratislava. They can expect around 450,000 spectators to show up at the ice rinks. 8,357 hours of TV will be transmitted in 166 countries to 1.3 billion spectators worldwide from this championship.
